A Word from DistinXion

Weekly Devotional

“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should
restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.” - Galatians 6:1-6
It is our responsibility to hold ourselves and each other accountable. We are responsible for helping each other, but also carrying our own loads. The responsibilities include both the believers' group responsibilities to one another and the individual believer's personal accountability before God. Our public care for one another must be matched by integrity in our private walk before God. Note how group responsibilities and individual accountability are woven together in this section:

1. Group: restore gently
2. Individual: watch yourself
3. Group: carry each other's burdens
4. Individual: each one should test his own actions . . . each one should carry his own load
5. Group: share all good things with his instructor
6. Individual: do not be deceived.

So Many Things to Be Thankful For

As coaches it is easy throughout the season to get caught up in the hustle and grind.  It makes it all the more important that we stop to realize what we are thankful for.  Hopefully this week of Thanksgiving and the first week of games gives us the opportunity we need to stop and reflect on all we have to be thankful for as coaches.  We need to show gratitude for whatever the situation is that we are dealing with - good or bad.

The following are some of the notes that I took from church yesterday from a sermon delivered by Dr. Georg Karl at the Vincennes First Church of God.  His sermon was entitled, “Faith Grows Gratitude”.  One of the major points that I took away from the sermon was that we are to show gratitude in good or bad.  We should constantly be thankful, for we have an eternity to be thankful for.

- Each of us believe some STORY by which we decide whether we are blessed or deprived.
- The prevailing STORIES in the world are easy to adopt.
- “That’s the story of my life…”
When I have a SURPLUS, I show gratitude; when I am shorted, I will blame.
When EXPECTATIONS are met or exceeded, I give thanks; when I am disappointed, I complain.
When PEOPLE want and love me, I appreciate it; when they use and overlook me, I retaliate.
- Faith in God through Christ REJECTS the narratives in the world and includes us in God’s new story.
God is GOOD and that eternal reality is greater than tiny temporal unfairness.  (Psalm 136)
I am becoming the person I always BELIEVE I should be - that is all that matters. (1 John 3:2-3)
I am LOVED because God loves me - no level of popularity can compete with that. (1 John 4:9-10)
Since God is CONSTANT, my gratitude is consistent.

As we get rolling along here with the season, may we remember 1 Thessalonians 5:18 and show constant and consistent gratitude for our players, schools, and situations, no matter what the circumstances.  As I always say, somebody would love to have our mess.

Choose Today Whom You Will Serve

READY

14 "So fear the Lord and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord alone. 15 But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord." - Joshua 24:14-15

SET

Most athletes that are serious about making it to the elite or next level find they have to make sacrifices. There are only 24 hours in a day. There is school, training, practice, family, friends, jobs, sleep, etc. They all want, need, or pull at those brief hours in the day. The serious athlete begins to limit some things to focus on getting better at their sport. I can remember taking training so serious, that it became like a 9-5 in the off season. I would do my road running in the morning followed by breakfast. I stretched after breakfast and then hit the weights. I would get my protein shake and take a short nap. I would eat lunch then hit baseballs off a tee or long toss. I would drink a small protein shake. Then I would head to my local high school track for sprints/agility work and to run bleachers. I would go home and eat dinner. Only after all of this did I give myself "free time."

For Christians, there is a similar battle for our time. Joshua took a stand for God. He said "as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." There were many distractions for the Israelites and many more for us today. We have constant media at our fingertips. Instead of Bible study, many get caught in a Snapchat binge. Instead of morning prayer-time, many sleep in from being up texting too late. Instead of healthy fellowship, many go to parties with friends they should be sharing the Gospel with.

Joshua took a stand and told everyone else to decide whom they would serve. Would they choose the Lord? Would they choose the world, idols, and themselves? We have to ask ourselves the same thing today. Who will we serve? I pray that today you will choose to serve the Lord.

GO

1. What activities are inhibiting my getting closer to God?
2. Am I truly serving the Lord with my life?
3. Can I fast from my cell phone/social media for 40 days?
