A Word from DistinXion

Weekly Devotional

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in
such a way as to get the prize.” - 1 Corinthians 9:24
The prize of life is eternity with God in Heaven. That’s a pretty good prize. Live life in order to win. Don’t just meander through hoping that someone else will pick up the responsibility to reach your goal. Go through your days with your eyes on your goal. Just like every runner's step is placed in purpose to get to the goal and every basketball players action is to win for his or her team, make the moments of your life actions of glorifying God. You will enjoy your prize at the end even if it takes hard work and hustle in the race.

Question

What is something that you are responsible for everyday? How can you “make it better”?

Message from Coach Thompson

Look Up

This Sunday, Dr. Karl, our pastor at the Vincennes First Church of God delivered a sermon entitled, “Look Up”.  His message was about the fact that we shouldn’t be looking down and be discouraged when we see all of the issues going on in our world, we should be looking up - to the Lord.  When we see all the political struggle, natural disasters, religious persecution, pain/suffering - we know that we are simply living in the end times, anticipating the return of our Savior.

As coaches, we know that our teams are going to follow our lead.  We need players who understand that we mean business, but today’s kids and players (me included) don’t want to hear negativity all the time.  That doesn’t mean that you always have to be nice, but you have to keep a focus on positivity and your overall goal(s).

Philippians Chapter 3 is a great place for us to go when we are in need of a reminder to look up.
15 So let's keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision - you'll see it yet! 16 Now that we're on the right track, let's stay on it. 17 Stick with me, friends. Keep track of those you see running this same course, headed for this same goal. 18 There are many out there taking other paths, choosing other goals, and trying to get you to go along with them. I've warned you of them many times; sadly, I'm having to do it again. All they want is easy street. They hate Christ's Cross. 19 But easy street is a dead-end street. Those who live there make their bellies their gods; belches are their praise; all they can think of is their appetites. 20 But there's far more to life for us. We're citizens of high heaven! We're waiting the arrival of the Savior, the Master, Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our earthly bodies into glorious bodies like his own. He'll make us beautiful and whole with the same powerful skill by which he is putting everything as it should be, under and around him.”

Proverbs 4:25 also tells us, “Keep your eyes focused on what is right, and look straight ahead to what is good.”  Over the coming weeks and months of practice - let us continue to keep focus and look up always - not back, not forward, and definitely not down - LOOK UP!
.

Walk On Warrior by John Willkom

After 13 years of going back and forth on this, I finally buckled down the past couple years and finished my book: Walk-On Warrior, which launched a few weeks ago on Amazon.

The book details my experiences as a walk-on at Marquette, working for Rick Majerus, assisting the Milwaukee Bucks, and how basketball opened doors for me that I never thought were possible. Growing up in a small town in Wisconsin, I hope this book inspires young athletes that want to play at the next level and provides a sincere and authentic look at what it's like to play Division 1 college basketball.
