Mid-range Curl Workout with Mike Dunn

Our good friend and Instagram star, Mike Dunn, joined us in the Dish Lab in this Dr. Dish Skill Builder workout!

Here, he works on shooting off of the curl action. This is a common action that many teams and players utilize in every game. The key is to execute each drill at game speed and simulate game situations.

Keeping Focus

Three times a year, in the fall, winter, and spring, the Community United Methodist Church in Vincennes has a breakfast to honor the fall, winter, and spring Knox County athletes in conjunction with their FCA huddles.  The people there at the church do a wonderful job and the huddle sponsors work with that specific sport season’s coaches to promote it among our athletes.  The CUMC along with FCA sponsors always try to get a speaker to come in and motivate the student-athletes to do their best in representing their schools and communities as well as keeping their focus on Christ.

At the fall 2017 meeting the CUMC pastor, Stacy Downing, shared with the Knox County FCA members and athletes a message about focus.  She shared the story of Peter from the book of Matthew.  As she talked about having success as an athlete and having a focus and vision in our training and play, she compared it to how Peter walked across the water to Jesus.  One thing in particular that she focused on was how Peter was fine until right before he got to Jesus.  When he was so close to his goal, that is when he took his eyes off of Jesus, focused on the roaring waves, and lost focus on what was most important.  She told the kids that we have to remain focused, but so many times in life when we get so close to where we want to be in our walk with the Lord or close to a goal, we allow ourselves to lose focus.

As we coaches make plans for the upcoming off-season; reflect on the season that was; and develop our visions of what we are going to do with our teams, let us keep our focus where it needs to be.  Be men of faith who lead your team with integrity; showing your players how to be men of faith; keeping your eyes on the prize and not losing focus no matter what the crashing waves of the season may bring.

Battling For Your Faith

Ready

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape, so that you are able to bear it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13

Set

During a 2004 game against the Cubs, Alex Cora of the Dodgers fouled fourteen straight pitches before hitting a home run. That took determination, concentration, and an unwillingness to give up. Cora battled through tough pitch after pitch until he got one he could handle. Life is full of situations where it is easier to give up than battle until we get a pitch we can handle. How many marriages have been abandoned because one spouse wanted an easier life? How many athletes have been overlooked while new athletes were given time and attention? All too often, Christians have grown weary and given into sin, thinking, This temptation is too hard; I'll get right with God later.

As Jesus contemplated His fate on the cross, He prayed, "Abba, Father! All things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will" (Mk 14:36). What cup has God given you that you are begging, or perhaps even demanding, that He take away? The Apostle Peter wrote, "You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to be distressed by various trials so that the genuineness of your faith-more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire-may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ" (1 Pt 1:6-7). Will you live a life that says, "Not my will, but Yours," or will you muddle through life swinging only at easy pitches?

Go

1. Have you accepted that suffering is part of the Christian life?
2. According to today's Scripture verse, why is it always possible to resist sin?
3. How do you handle slights and mistreatment? What can the life of Christ teach you about this?

Workout

Matthew 16:24-28; Romans 5:1-4; Philippians 2:5-11

Overtime

Lord, help me to never give up on You. Give me courage to resist the temptation to quit. Help me live a life of faith that points others to You. Amen.
