A Word from DistinXion

Weekly Devotional

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no
one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:12–13
Jesus doesn’t issue a suggestion or a recommendation. He commands His disciples to love one another. Notice Jesus doesn’t say, “This is my commandment, that you like one another.” That isn’t a choice. Let’s face it, there are some people you like, and there are some you don’t like. You don’t like their personalities, their preferences, or their priorities. You don’t have any chemistry. That’s okay. You still can love them even though you don’t like them.!

Question 1

How can we love people we don't like?

6 Things Great Players Do In and Out of Season

From:  Nick Bartlett

One of the easiest and commonly known ways to separate yourself during the season is by maximizing practice time. And in the off-season it's by maximizing your time in workouts and training sessions. In both cases, this should ALWAYS be a priority.

Time Outs

“Be gracious to me, Lord, for I am weak; heal me, Lord, for my bones are shaking….The Lord has heard my pleas for help; the Lord accepts my prayer.”  Psalm 6:2, 9

We all know that a key time-out in the game can be a great thing.  As coaches, it is very easy for us to want to be in total control of everything that happens on a daily basis to key moments in a game.  If we had our druthers we’d be in complete control all of the time.  I think that is how all coaches are wired.  Ultimately though, as Christian coaches, we realize (but don’t want to admit) how little control we really have.

A personal journey with the Lord requires active participation.  We are a lot like our athletes.  Sometimes we are shaken.  Sometimes we get rattled.  When this happens in a game we call time-outs for our teams.  What follows is a private discussion between the coach and the team.  Few people are privy to this conversation.  The point is to go back into the game with a defined adjustment or refocus on the game plan.

In our lives and walk with the Lord, when we are shaken or rattled, the Lord with call for a quick TO - maybe it's a :30 or a full, but when he does we need to listen.  If we are going to make the proper adjustments, we have to listen.  To enable the Lord to give us the direction we have to enter into the time-out with an open mind and heart.  This is what our prayer and devotional time is for and if we don’t choose it the Lord may reach out in a more abrupt manner.  The Lord seeks these time-outs to restore, encourage, and put pieces of our life together so we come out stronger and refreshed to complete the race.

Lord, it is our prayer as coaches this week that you will help us call timeouts if needed in our life.  Help us to look to Christ as our Coach for direction when the game is getting hard, and give us grace not to call the plays ourselves.  Above all - help us listen to your coaching.

What's My Training Today, Dad?

Ready

Instead, train yourself to be godly. "Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come." 1 Timothy 4:7b-8

Set

After Ringo Borlain won the 2006 Mr. Universe Body Building Competition, he found an even bigger joy—training his children, Samantha, Tara and Franchezka, in the triathlon.

Ringo knew not only which drills increase his children’s speed and correct their errors, but also which regimen builds their stamina and strengthens their character. As their father, he walked with them the fine line of balancing school and sports.

Some days the children would crash on their beds, exhausted after having been pushed beyond their limits. But each morning, they’d greet Ringo with “What’s our training today, Dad?” Excited to get better, they trusted that their father will stretch them to be the best they could be.

Your loving Father in heaven has designed you for His greatness. He understands which circumstances increases your strength. He knows which of your prayers build your faith. He knows which people could journey with you. He knows which victory or loss shapes your character. He recognizes which discipline makes you wiser. He is invested in your whole-life training: body, heart, mind and spirit.

God dreams for you an “abundant life” in your sport and beyond. Trust that He redeems even the pain of defeat or hard training to stretch you for His glorious purposes for you.

Oh, that we would greet Him every morning with “What’s our training today, Dad?”?

Go

1. Do I trust God to train me for righteousness?
2. In what form has God been training me lately?
3. How do I prepare my heart to receive the Lord’s instruction?

Overtime

Lord, you are my true Coach and biggest fan. I welcome your instruction and loving discipline in my life and in my sport. Please help me persevere in your training as an athlete and a person. Amen.
