Coach Knight is obviously talking about the game of basketball, but this quote can and should be applied to our spiritual life as coaches.

A Word from DistinXion

Weekly Devotional

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” - 1 Corinthians 15:58

Any work you do serving the Lord will not be in vain. It will not be forgotten because it will make an eternal impact on the Kingdom. When you serve others, it is an overflow of God’s love for you and you in turn, pouring it out on others.

Question

What can you do every day to love and serve your neighbor? What might you give
up to have the time/energy/money to help others? Coffee? Shopping? Video games?

Drill of the Week

15 Minute Shooting

In this Skill Builder workout on the NEW Dr. Dish CT shooting machine, our friend Bre Salley of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx Basketball Academy demonstrates a 3 shooting drills that are set to 5 minutes each.

This is a great workout to warm up and/or cool down and involves shooting off the move while maximizing reps in a short amount of time.

Two Wolves

“For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not practice what I want to do, but I do what I hate.”  Romans 7:15

One of my favorite nuggets to share with players is the old Cherokee proverb about two wolves.  In listening to Dr. David Jeremiah’s recent series on “A Life Beyond Amazing” he discussed the importance of self-discipline and what the Bible tells us about it.  I recommend you share the story of the two wolves with your players this year as you discuss the way you want them to conduct themselves on and off the court.  I also recommend downloading the Turning Point Ministries app on your phone and checking Dr. David Jeremiah out...he is amazing - a former high school and college player, turned minister who for a period of time pastored a church in Ft. Wayne.

Here is a brief summary of the seven items that Dr. David Jeremiah explained you have to have in order to have spiritual self-discipline.  These items can all be applied to everything that we do as coaches as well.

Embrace Imperfections - You are not perfect so stop doing things to cover up your flaws that compromise your character and integrity.

Beware of Good Intentions - You might think you are doing something for someone or yourself that is done with good intentions, but when you get a chance to step back you see that it really creates more problems.

Begin Working Out - Not in the physical sense, but you have to start doing things that you don’t necessarily come natural.  For example, you have to dig into your daily devotion - something you have to make yourself do.

Keep Focused - Once you get started rolling in the direction you want to be headed you have to keep your focus on.  This is when the going gets tough.  When you think you are going in the right direction.  That’s when you begin to trick yourself that things are going well and you lose focus.

Talk Back to Your Body - When you don’t want to get out of bed in the morning; when you don’t want to get off the couch to do something with a loved one; when you don’t want to put in that extra time with your prayer or devotion - make sure you win this battle by telling your body - I’m going to do this.

Make Your Bed - Do the little things every single day that will make a huge difference in the end.  I really enjoyed this part of Dr. David Jeremiah’s lecture about the Navy Seals and their struggle through their training.  He talks about how they are taught to do all the little things to become the most disciplined and highly trained group in the United States military.

Never Quit - When things look bleak don’t throw in the towel.  You know it is worth it.  You have to endeavor to persevere knowing that your ultimate goal is on the horizon.  If you quit you will regret it forever.

So, which wolf wins?  The one you feed.

Teammates

Ready

"Be conscientious about yourself and your teaching; persevere in these things, for by doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers." -1 Timothy 4:16

Set

Chad was the consummate team player, working harder than everyone else. He was humble and unselfish, and never once did I hear him talk trash to an opponent. I knew there was something different about Chad, but I couldn't quite figure out what it was.

At age 16 I began to search for the purpose of my existence. Sports were gratifying, but I knew they wouldn't last forever. Around this time, I learned that the difference between Chad and me was that he had a personal relationship with Jesus that influenced his life on and off the field.

Through the connection I had with Chad as a competitor and teammate, his life had a huge influence on my decision to give my life to Christ. Without the bond we had through sports, Chad would not have influenced my life the way he did. The celebration of victories, disappointment of tough losses, sweat, and sacrifices helped us develop a strong relationship and opened my heart to see and hear the message of Christ.

As a Christian competitor, I encourage athletes to view their teams as mission fields. Jesus is calling us to be His ambassadors and help reconcile our teammates to God.

Go

1. How have your teammates influenced your life? In what ways are you influencing theirs?
2. How would you describe the bond you feel with your teammates?
3. Identify one teammate for whom you will pray and intentionally pour Christ's love into through your words and actions.

Workout

2 Corinthians 5:17; 6:2; Colossians 4:2-6; 1 Peter 3:15

Overtime

God, I want to influence my teammates the way Chad did. Please help me live in such a way that my teammates notice something different about me. Open up opportunities for me to share about Your love and forgiveness that covers our sins. Please use me to make a difference in this world. Amen.
