A Word from DistinXion

Weekly Devotional

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” — 1 Peter 4:8–10
Each person has been uniquely gifted by God and for God. With these gifts, we are called to use these gifts to Him by serving others. You were created for a purpose. A purpose that is bigger than yourself. An eternal purpose. Our gifts are meant for encouraging others to rise to their full potential in God. We all have been given a gift that we can use to help someone else along the way. No matter what it is – big or small – we have a part to play and we can use our gifts for God's glory.

Question 1

What are your gifts and how are you using them?

Question 2

What else has been given to you by God and how can use it to serve Him and
others?

Get Back on Track

I always love getting notes from former players, coaches, or kids that worked with our program as managers, videographers or statisticians.  This past weekend I got a great note from Wyatt Roberts, who now serves as an assistant for Vincennes.  When I was there Wyatt was Mr. Everything - stats, scouting, film, bible study, etc.  Wyatt was like a member of the coaching staff, even though he was still in high school.  Wyatt and I developed a close relationship and continue to text and talk.  Our friendship has grown even closer because of our affiliation with Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Wyatt sent me a note this weekend about his church sermon from Sunday.  He told me that he had a great service and wanted to share part of the pastor’s message.  He said that his pastor had talked to the congregation about our walk with the Lord and said that it isn’t like walking a tightrope.  We can fall off and it isn’t the end.  He told them that our walk with Jesus is more like listening to the GPS, when you get off track it tells you that it is relocating and looking for a new route to get you back on your way to your destination.  A relationship with the Lord is just like having a spiritual GPS.

When we get off track in our walk with the Lord, at home with our families, with our team or maybe assistant coaches and know it’s time to get back on track - we know where to turn.  Wherever and whenever it is, all we have to do is get out the GPS (the Bible), read, and pray for direction.  It is also great to have those around us who help us “relocate” our path.  Having spiritual accountability partners and friends in faith - even if they are your former players or managers - are great ways to stay on the right path with the Lord.

Going, Going, Gone

Ready

"So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen; for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." – 2 Corinthians 4:18

Set

When five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe retired from competitive swimming at the age of 24 he said, "breaking records wasn't as inspiring as it should have been." As a teenager, Thorpe splashed into the swimming scene and swam to 13 world records from 1999 to 2002, becoming an international star after dominating at the Sydney Olympics.

Even with all the success, he realized the medals, titles, records, and accomplishments did not last long. The fans went home. The cameras were turned off. And Ian was left with an empty feeling that success cannot fill. The external stuff fades quickly. It is never enough.

It sounds crazy to focus on the unseen. If we can't see it, then why did Paul encourage us to focus on it? He knew that world records do not last. As competitors, God desires for us to do our best for His glory. Whether it's breaking 13 world records or just playing pick-up basketball, God wants us to play for Him. What are our motives? To win titles? Break records? Get trophies? Or play for Him?

Go

1. What have you won in the past that was significant at the time, but now is no big deal?
2. Why is it so easy to focus on the seen? Why is it so hard to focus on the unseen?
3. What are three ways you can keep a focus on the unseen?
4. Who is a great example in your life who focuses on the unseen?

Workout

Proverbs 23:4-5; James 4:13-14

Overtime

Lord, I desire to compete for You alone. I am resolved to focus on the unseen not the seen. Help me to remove things that blur my vision. Too often I dwell on the external stuff. Show me that all I need is You. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Let all the glory be Yours. Amen.
