Great things take time. If you want to build and develop your character through the Lord you must be patient.

Question 1

Are you impatient with your athletic development? Give an example of how you are impatient
if so.

Question 2

Do you think it could be helpful if you slowed down and trusted that things would unfold in God’s time? (“Slow is smooth and smooth is fast”)

Giving Back

I had a tremendous time at the HBCA All-Star game on Sunday. It is so great to see coaches who are officers and HBCA team members who are there to give back. I really appreciated seeing coaches who love giving back to the game and who really work to do all they can do for our association and the kids that the HBCA serves. Each and every person who attended to work and to do their part is greatly appreciated.

Coaches have a gift and are tremendous teachers. The coaches in the HBCA, and specifically the officers and team members who were there working at the all-star game on Sunday, are true leaders who’s example of servant leadership is truly what coaching is all about. Romans 12:6-8 tells us that, “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”

All of the coaches and HBCA team members who worked Sunday’s game know that it is a true labor of love. This game simply doesn’t just come together. There are tons of behind the scenes hours spent planning, organizing, etc. This year’s event was one of our best events. The banquet, the Hall of Excellence inductions and speaker were tremendous, and it all led up to two of the best/most competitive all-star games we have had in years. Here’s to another year in the books and let’s do all we can as an association to make 2019 an even better year for the HBCA.

The Power of Fear

READY

“Did you eat from the tree that I had commanded you not to eat from? Then the man replied, “The woman You gave to be with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate.” So the LORD God asked the woman, “What is this you have done?”— Genesis 3:11–13

SET

As an English teacher, I instruct my students to look for symbols in literature. As a basketball coach, I often use symbols from literature to teach my players, such as in Genesis 3:11 where God asks Adam and Eve if they have eaten the forbidden fruit. Instead of telling the truth and asking for forgiveness, Adam blamed both God and Eve. When God asked Eve the same question, she blamed the snake. Since then, mankind has been pointing fingers and playing the blame game.

Adam and Eve refused to take responsibility for their sin and placed the blame on someone else. They were not working as a team. The same holds true for athletics. When a team plays poorly, frustration often sets in.Instead of each player looking at what he can do to improve the situation, he looks for someone to blame. At that point, the team begins to break down.

Unfortunately, many players learn this behavior from how their coaches interact with officials. Anyone who has been around athletics for any length of time has heard coaches complaining about the referees and blaming them for a loss. Coaches have to remember that their players watch what they say and do.

Instead of falling into the destructive blame game, coaches and players need to slow down and look within themselves to ensure they are not the ones at fault. After all, it was Adam’s fault that Eve ate the forbidden fruit. God had specifically instructed him that it was forbidden, and as the captain of the team, it was Adam’s responsibility to make sure the rest of the team understood.

GO

1. How should a coach handle a situation where teammates are blaming one another for mistakes or bad plays?
2. How does humility play a part in this situation?

OVERTIME

Heavenly Father, please help me avoid finger pointing when the going gets tough. Give me the fortitude to admit my mistakes and accept responsibility for my actions. Amen.
