Step Up
Seven years ago I got a second chance in my coaching career. After being fired, let go, non-renewed, whatever you want to call it, I got another chance. The administrators and school board at Wood Memorial took a chance on a guy who I am sure many in the community thought, why? An amazing thing happened when I got that chance though. I firmly believe that the opportunity was created as an answer to prayer. I had told the Lord that if He was done with me in coaching that He could use me however He saw fit, even if I still had a personal desire to coach. One thing that I promised Him though was that no matter where He placed me or had in His plans - I would attempt to honor Him in everything that I did as a coach and with my team.
That is why when I started at Wood Memorial and got to know the players and developed relationships with them that I quickly gravitated to a young man named Conner Mowery. Conner was very strong in his faith. I talked to Conner about FCA and how I felt like the Lord wanted me to be more committed to my faith. I later found out that Conner had been praying for an opportunity to lead faithfully in the school, but he just didn’t know how. We partnered together to found the chapter of FCA at Wood Memorial. Conner has since graduated and I have moved on, but something that endures at Wood Memorial is the FCA chapter that we founded there and the JH FCA chapter that his younger sister helped found a few years later.
My challenge to you this off-season is to find a way that you can STEP UP in your school and in your role as a coach. Embrace the face that being a faithful coach is a challenge. It is a challenge that requires toughness. It is a challenge that many will even criticize you for and potentially even talk behind your back. To that I ask, who do you serve? Do you serve men or the Lord. If your answer is where it should be then take the steps to lead your program by example and get involved with FCA, establish a bible study with your team, encourage team prayer, etc. Your players will thank you for it one day. They will remember that you showed toughness and you were willing to STEP UP not because it glorifies you or the program, but because it is a way for you to serve Him.

God's Game Plan
Ready
After Moses came back, He summoned the elders of the people, and put before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. Then all the people responded together, "We will do all that the LORD has spoken." So Moses brought the people's words back to the LORD. —Exodus 19:7-8Set
Coaches work hard to get the job done for their programs, but the head coach spends even more time in preparation for his or her meetings. It's not just the season preparations that need to be done, but also pre-season, postseason, and summer workouts to consider. The head coach must think of everyone in the program and blend every person together for the success of the next year.Moses had quite a team. After patiently dealing with Pharaoh, the Israelites were finally given the freedom to go with their head coach and leader, Moses. Moses took his job very seriously. He listened to and followed God in order to lead his team through their journey. Though his team grumbled many times, Moses convinced them to stick with the plan. Moses would go and speak with God and then come back and meet with his "assistant coaches" (elders or tribal leaders) and present to them God's game plan for the day or week. The Israelites responded to God's plan through Moses, claiming they would do "all the LORD had spoken" (Ex 19:8).
Moses did the right thing. He received God's "game plan," presented it to his assistants, and then set the plan in motion with his team. However, because of a lack of obedience to God's plan, there were defeats and disappointments along the way. Amid those struggles, Moses stayed with the plan because he trusted God. As coaches, we need to stick with the plan even in tough times. If we endure, we may reach our ultimate goal one day. As believers, it is important that we follow God's game plan for our lives.
Go
1. Is your "game plan" prepared, planned, and presented to your staff before your team?2. Do you know God's game plan for your life?
3. Today, how can you start to implement God's plan for your life?
