Sponsors

We would like to welcome BSN Sports as the newest HBCA partner! The main way in which BSN will be contributing to the HBCA will be for the 2019 Spring All-Star Classic. As the official sponsor for this event, they will provide the uniforms for the players and polo shirts for the coaches. We look forward to this partnership with BSN Sports and hope to continue to collaborate with them in the future. A big thank you goes out to Jeff Neel from Evansville, who is responsible for setting up this sponsorship. This couldn't have happened without your help!

A Word from DistinXion

Weekly Devotional

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:28
Optimism shouldn’t be placed in our circumstances. We can be optimistic because of God. Our circumstances vary, but God is constant. God can take tragedy and make it great. Regardless of what may happen in this life, we know that God sees, cares, and will “wipe every tear from our eyes” when we are forever with Him (Revelation 21:4). That confidence can give us an optimistic outlook, even in difficult circumstances. Biblical optimism does not place so much emphasis on earthly events. It can accept difficult circumstances because it believes that “all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). Godly hope looks beyond what we understand to view life from God’s  perspective.

Question 1

When you are feeling pessimistic, how can you reverse your thoughts??

Drills of the Week

Watson Close-outs

This is a great defensive drill that I picked up from Coach Rodney Watson, head men’s coach at USI.  He spoke at our HBCA clinic several years ago and I have brought it back this year due to the fact that we are really battling our guys to get low and stay low defensively.  Coach Watson utilizes “chutes” a lot in practice to emphasize this point and this is a good drill that you can run your team through 2-3 times in practice and hammer home the point.

Weekly Article from Dr. Dish

8 Ways to be a Great Teammate

1. Great teammates give maximum effort.

They are the first players to arrive at practice and the last players to leave. They are always finding ways to get some extra reps in (ideally on Dr. Dish!). Great teammates don’t take plays off. They lead by example and bring it every single day regardless of how they feel that day.

Message from Coach Thompson

Eyes on the Prize

As we get into this January grind it is all too easy to get upset with one loss or focus on the negative.  This can easily divert our focus from keeping our eyes on the prize.  Just as we are instructed in Philippians to maintain our focus on pursuing the Lord, the scripture at the top of our newsletter each week, we need to be reminded that our job is to get our teams playing at their highest levels at the end of the season.  When we have a setback or a loss it is all too easy to keep our focus on that and divert it from what is most important.

Surrounding yourself with people who will help you to keep that focus and get back on track is important.  It is easy to “beat a dead horse”.  I’ve seen this Dean Smith quote several times in the past month or so.  It is a great reminder that when bad things happen to us throughout practice, games, and in the classroom, we recognize it, admit it, learn from it, and forget it.  You have to move on and get your eyes back on the prize.

Our spiritual walks are no different.  We can easily focus on the negative and dwell on mistakes.  However, if we continue to beat that horse, then we aren’t moving on to attack what we can really make a difference in - the future.  We all fail in our spiritual walks.  We have to learn from those mistakes, pray for forgiveness, and move on.  My hope for you and your teams this week is that no matter what happens, you can take the Dean Smith approach and use mistakes and failures to make you better in the future - whether that be with your play on the court or on the Lord’s playing field.

We have announced the 2019 Southern Indiana FCA Leadership Camp!  It will be July 1st - 3rd, 2019 at Camp Illiana in Washington, IN.  It will be for any student that will be entering into grades 6 -12 in the 2019-2020 school year.  We are really excited about camp this year! Leadership Camp is a great place to send your potential student leaders to help train them in spiritual leadership, even if they don't plan on being in leadership it is still a great place for them to come and fellowship with other students from Southern Indiana.  Please let me know if you have any questions!

Below, you can see a flyer for camp, feel free to share it and there is also a PDF available on our website.
