A Word from DistinXion

Weekly Devotional

“Make your own attitude that of Jesus Christ.”                                                                                                                    - Philippians 2:5
Choose a strong, important role model. When you are looking for a purpose, make that purpose to live and work through God, and his followers. He died so others could be saved, and lived every day looking to improve the quality of life for all. Never negative, never rude.

Question 1

How do you react when your team messes up? Why? How should you react?

Question 2

What have you learned about how your attitude affects your performance?

Weeding Your Life

One of my favorite things to do for stress relief is to work outside and more specifically, work with my landscaping.  I love to mess with my landscaping.  It is a great way to just get some time to spruce things up and enjoy what the Lord has blessed me with.  One area that I tend to neglect is an area of my landscaping that no one ever sees, even if they come into our backyard.  People cannot see if it from the road and you only notice it when the tops of the weeds begin to crop over the top of the berm.  I even noticed it was the last area that I worked on this past weekend.  I did everything I could to avoid this area.  I knew it was going to take a long time and a lot of work to get it to come around.  The weeds were tall and I had enjoyed doing everything else that I did throughout the day, even if it was 100+ with the heat index.

Then, I realized that we all have those areas that need to be weeded in our life.  These are often the areas that very few people see, just like the back of my berm.  You know what your area of life is.  Maybe you are like me and have several.  As John tells us in John 8:32 “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  This has encouraged me to tackle the areas of my life that need weeding.  I know the truth and I cannot lie to God or to myself -  I’m going all in and going after them, both spiritually and physically.

Now that we as basketball coaches have a little bit of a break in the action between the June season and the start of school, let’s focus on getting the weeds under control.  We are told how we should live in 2 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”

Have a Blessed Week - Coach Thompson

Little Things

READY

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy!’” — Matthew 25:21

SET

One of my favorite things about John Wooden’s coaching was that he taught his players each year to put on their socks and tie their shoes properly. You’d think college-age athletes could already do this, but Wooden took nothing for granted. He paid attention to the little things which made the big things come easier for his teams over the years.

Of course, Coach Wooden wanted to teach his players a lesson: if they were going to play in his program, they had to put aside what they wanted to do and follow his plans for the team. That discipline in the small things gave his teams great results, winning ten national championships and setting an example for us of the fact that little things make the biggest difference.

Sometimes in our walk with the Lord, we neglect what we might perceive as “the little things” because we get too busy. We forget that daily time with God in His Word, prayer, and serving others all help us learn to be faithful. However, as we learn from the parable in Matthew’s Gospel, we can’t assume we’ll be given many things until we’re first faithful with the few. These seemingly small steps make a huge difference in how we’ll handle bigger responsibilities.

To serve the Lord, we must put aside our own selfish desires and follow Christ in the little things. After all, He gave up His position as God to endure life as a man. Scripture says, “He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross” (Php 2:8). As a result of His willingness to serve faithfully, God exalted Him and gave Him the name above all names.
o the implications presented in this verse grab your attention? Do you labor or stay alert in vain? Perhaps you’ve heard the statement, “Where there is smoke; there must be fire.” The unconditional love of God is the “smoke” that demands a response of obedience, especially when it comes to our daily labor.

GO

1. What little things do you need to do to help your team?
2. What small steps can you take toward faithfulness in your spiritual walk?
3. How can you be faithful in all areas of your life?
