Drill of the Week

Cut-Throat

When things aren’t going the way you want them to go during the season, or you are wanting to increase competition in practice, a great drill to implement is called Cut-Throat. You can really mix this drill up from 2-on-2 all the way up to 5-on-5, but we really feel like we get the most out of it when we go 3-on-3.

We will put time on the clock (most of the time 10:00) and have the kids divided into three teams, Gray, Orange, and Pennies. Offensively, if you score it is make it take it. We use the following scoring system, but do vary it from time to time depending on if there is something we feel we need to do a better job of emphasizing. Made Basket = 1 point (two or three); Turnover = -3 (this is something we are really emphasizing right now because we need to do a better job of valuing possessions); Offensive Rebounds = 2 points; Charge = 3 points. If offensive team is fouled they get one point and retain possession (this has to be a hard foul and usually one going to the rim. We tell them, “Hey, this drill is Big 10.) There is no out of bounds until the offense scores or the defense gets possession. This really increases the hustling after loose balls and scrapping that we all want out of our teams.

Our freshman coach officiates under the basket and we take a point away every time that a player whines about a call. Things get very heated and competitive because the two losing teams have to run 17 touches in 1:05. We also have another coach that enters the ball to the offensive team on the next possession and they are live once they get the ball from the coach. This keeps the flow going and it becomes a great conditioner for our guys because the new team coming in on defense has to sprint out or they will give up an uncontested shot.

Keep it Going

Congratulations from all of us here at the HBCA to all our girls coaches whose teams hoisted Sectional trophies this past weekend. We are very proud of you and all your teams have accomplished. Keep it rolling. Keep it going. You are now in the Sweet 16 of your class. What an accomplishment for you, your team, your program, and your communities. Those on the outside of coaching looking in at what we do as coaches leading our programs have no idea the time and efforts that go into this.

No better words to describe the accomplishment could be said than those that came from Bloomfield’s Ron Knepp last night. CLICK HERE to see what Coach Knepp had to say about his Lady Cardinals winning the title.

Celebration

Ready

On that day they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced because God had given them great joy. Nehemiah 12:43a

Set

The Israelites had not had a reason to celebrate for a very long time; they had lived in slavery to other nations for about one hundred fifty years. In fact, Nehemiah’s brother called his people, the Israelites, a disgrace (Neh 1) But now, God had done a new work in their midst, and the people of Israel were thankful and filled with joy. Nehemiah 12 describes a national celebration in which they dedicated the rebuilt wall and celebrated the victory of God. To make sure they celebrated with gusto, Nehemiah brought the best musicians and singers to lead them in worship with “thanksgiving and singing accompanied by cymbals, harps, and lyres” They celebrated joyfully, because “God had given them great joy” (Neh 12:27, 43).

Go

Celebration and joy go hand in hand. Too many Christians have missed out on the joy of celebration, and for that reason, this story in the book of Nehemiah should be an encouragement to us to celebrate our salvation in Christ with abandon. The Israelites celebrated so loud that the rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard from far away. There are at least four keys to lasting joy found in Nehemiah 12:27–47. First, the Israelites purified themselves before celebrating. Sin will always rob us of joy. Confess and repent of your sin, and watch the joy return. Second, the people celebrated on top of the wall because they were not ashamed of their association with God. Has the fear of persecution robbed you of joy? Read Matthew 5:10–21 and then discover that joy will inevitably follow boldness for Christ. Third, the Israelites celebrated the victory of God and counted their blessings. Have you taken time to celebrate your salvation and other victories in Christ? Finally, the people gave cheerfully. Proverbs 11:25 says, “A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed” Giving refreshes the soul.

The Israelites knew firsthand the anguish of a broken spirit, but they were living in a new day, and they approached it with a joyful heart. Is today a new day for you? It certainly can be if you will walk with Jesus and celebrate His salvation.

Workout

Overtime

Lord, renew in me the joy of Your salvation. Amen.
