Always Do the Right Thing

It doesn’t matter if you’ve had the greatest weekend of your coaching career or the worst.  It doesn’t matter if you are in the midst of the greatest season in your coaching career or right smack dab in the middle of your worst losing streak ever. As coaches we are always going to face adversity, and many times right when we least expect it. No matter how many times you stress certain things to your players, they are going to make poor choices. That is when we have to make sure we do the right thing for our team, but more importantly for ourselves.

I recently spoke with another coach whose team is definitely headed in the right direction. Some of his players made some poor choices, and in our conversation we talked about how tough the situation was, but in the end you have to do the right thing and hold kids accountable. Is that always going to be the easiest thing to do, or what is going to put your team in the best spot to win games right away? Absolutely not.

Over the long haul though, for your team and for your professional career, you cannot let things slide. You cannot turn the other cheek to misconduct. For your integrity, for the integrity of your program and all that you stand for professionally, you have to deal with player issues head on. To be able to look in the mirror each and every single day and to say, “I did the right thing,” is what matters most. Wins and losses will come. Seasons will come and go, but your integrity in dealing with tough situations is what will have the lasting impact on the young men you coach - that will be part of your legacy.

Proverbs 24:10 - “If you falter in time of trouble, how small is your strength.”

James 1:2-4:  “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Audience of One

READY

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6

SET

Referees have a tough assignment. They must keep the game going, uphold the rules, keep every participant safe, and make sure not to create an advantage for either side. It’s a monumental task, all the while facing unbelievable pressure from the stands. But, in the midst of all that goes on during a game, the primary job of a referee is to represent truth. Have you noticed that all referees make truth statements?
“No catch…out of bounds…foul on you…off sides…touchdown…no good…time has expired.”
They don’t have favorites, aren’t rooting for one team over the other, and are simply stating the truth as they see it. Once the whistle blows, one side likes the call while, inevitably, the other side doesn’t. Regardless of the call, the referee makes someone happy and someone angry. Referees can never please everyone. That’s why they never try.

Jesus said, “I am the Truth.” What an amazing statement. Jesus didn’t come to please anyone, and He didn’t come to advance anyone’s agenda. Jesus came to represent God. He lived for an audience of one, learning early on that a person can’t make everyone happy. He only lived to bring glory to God. He represented truth, and when He came on the scene, some liked His message and others didn’t. We must learn that we can’t please all people. We must know Jesus, the Truth, if we are going to live to please the Lord. A referee must know the rules of the game that he or she officiates. To please God, you must know His Word and live it out in your life to show the Way for others.

GO

1. Who am I living to please?
2. What truth does my life represent?
3. Has Jesus become my only audience?

OVERTIME

Gracious heavenly Father, help me accept Your truth statements, grow in understanding of Your Word, and live out Your truth daily so that I might best represent You and glorify Your name in the arena of life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
